Kinful is a Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) program aimed at teaching children essential “life skills” through various tools, such as VAR 360, to enhance emotional intelligence within society. Specifically designed for students, this program was initiated by the US Embassy in Tanzania in collaboration with TELTA. It has demonstrated positive outcomes, with participating students displaying a significant awareness of the skills they are acquiring.
Teachers involved in this program undergo training before its commencement. The program spans 24 weeks, with student sessions held primarily on Saturdays to avoid disrupting weekday learning routines. The objective is to facilitate positive changes in children, as studies indicate that those equipped with these skills develop values and behaviours conducive to improved performance. The skills covered include social awareness, self-awareness, relationship skills, self-management, and responsible decision-making.
In our lessons, students engage in practical problem-solving activities aimed at equipping them with skills to address various societal issues. TELTA initiated this program in the 2018-2019 academic year with 25 students from five schools in Dar es Salaam participating. The schools included Mnazi Mmoja, Jamhuri, Jangwani, Azania, and Ilala. Due to its success, the program expanded in the 2021/2022 academic year, with 75 students from three regions: Dar es Salaam, Morogoro, and Mtwara.
The program is currently run in three areas; Bagamoyo, Manyara, and Zanzibar. In June 2024 all 75 students from these areas met in Dodoma for the camp. Teachers and students shared their experiences and knowledge.
