Welcome to TELTA

The Tanzanian English Language Teachers Association (TELTA) is dedicated to fostering a community where English language educators can share ideas, interests, and experiences while enhancing their teaching capabilities through various activities conducted at regional and national levels. TELTA is officially registered as a subject association by the Tanzanian Government with registration number S.A 18354. TELTA traces its origins back to the Teachers' Development Meeting (TDM) initiated in the 1990s during the English Language Teaching Support Program. In 2009, TDM evolved into TELTDM, which stood for Tanzania English Language Teachers' Development Meeting. Finally, in 2011, TDM transitioned into TELTA. Since its inception, TELTA has been instrumental in organizing and facilitating workshops for teachers and student activities aimed at improving English language skills. TELTA holds associate membership status with IATEFL (International Association of Teaching English as a Foreign Language) based in the United Kingdom, affiliate membership with TESOL (Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages) based in the United States of America and is a founding member of both Africa ELTA and African Lake Zone English Language Consortium (ALZELC). The organization operates across Tanzania with 22 chapters in various regions, including Dodoma, Kagera, Morogoro, Mtwara, Lindi, Simiyu, Mwanza, Manyara, Kigoma, Mara, Tabora, Tanga, Kilimanjaro, Arusha, Pwani, Ruvuma, Njombe, Iringa, Mbeya, Dar es Salaam, Singida, and Shinyanga.

A word from TELTA President

Greetings and welcome to the Tanzanian English Language Teachers’ Association’s (TELTA) website! It is my pleasure to extend a warm welcome to you. Our website serves as a platform where teachers can directly access TELTA's programs and projects, as well as stay updated on current teaching and learning methods and materials. TELTA is committed to various projects catering to both teachers and students. For teachers, we offer Teachers Continuous Professional Development (TCPD) opportunities, both virtually and in person. These include Content-Based Instruction (CBI), the PRELIM II project, Community of Practice (CoP), webinars, Facebook Live stream series, and workshops. For students, we provide the English Access Micro Scholarship Program, Kinful socio-emotional learning, and student competitions such as essay competitions, reading competitions, speaking competitions, debates, and spelling bees. TELTA is proud to be affiliated with Africa ELTA, IATEFL, and TESOL International. Currently, we are collaborating with the Regional English Language Office (RELO) under the U.S. Embassy in Tanzania, the British Council, and the President’s Office of Regional Administration and Local Government (including regional education officers and district education officers). We extend an open invitation to all Tanzanian English Language teachers to join TELTA and become active members. By joining us, they will benefit from our training programs and become the best teachers they can be. "TELTA is for us, and we are for TELTA."
